Flying Scotsman has been described as the world’s most famous steam locomotive and was originally an A1 Pacific steam locomotive. Built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster works to a design of Sir Nigel Gresley and initially numbered 1472. By 1924 the locomotive had been renumbered 4472 and had been given the name ‘Flying Scotsman’ after the London to Edinburgh rail service which started 10am daily in 1862.
